Resource Capacity Scheduler
Set how many hours each person or piece of equipment can provide on each date. Each one-day task reserves the specified hours from every required resource on the same date. The planner honors fixed-day tasks first, then tries higher priority and earlier deadline tasks on their earliest feasible day. Inspect every unassigned task and the daily remaining-hour ledger before relying on the plan. It is a bounded deterministic draft, not a global optimization or clock-time booking system.
Key features
- Separate person and equipment resources with 0–24 available hours for each day
- One-day tasks with priority, date window and up to four simultaneous resource demands
- Manual fixed-day reservations before automatic earliest-feasible assignment
- Shortage reasons for impossible demand and capacity taken by earlier assignments
- Daily utilization ledger, strict editable JSON round trip and rectangular CSV report
How to use
- Load the content-production example or start a blank plan; set a project start date and 1–31 day horizon.
- Add people or equipment and enter the available hours for each calendar date. Enter 0 for days off.
- Add one-day tasks with an earliest and latest date, priority and required hours for each resource.
- Optionally fix a task to one date. Review assigned dates, unassigned reasons and remaining hours, then adjust inputs.
- Download JSON to continue editing later and a CSV with task decisions and resource-day capacity rows.
Use cases
- Reserve a camera operator and studio for filming on the same day
- Find tasks that cannot fit in any available day of their window
- See how a fixed-day review displaces lower-priority work
- Share a daily hours report with the team while retaining editable inputs
Frequently asked questions
How does the planner choose assignments?
It reserves fixed-day tasks first, ordering by higher priority, earlier deadline and then ID. It processes remaining tasks in that order and selects each task's first feasible day. All required resources must have enough remaining hours on that day. This rule is deterministic but does not guarantee the most assignments or a global optimum.
What do the unassigned reasons mean?
Impossible demand means no date in the task window has sufficient base availability even before other tasks. Capacity taken means at least one date could have fit the task initially, but earlier reservations consumed hours. Fixed-day variants report the same distinction for the selected date. The table names the inspected date and resource-hour shortages.
Can a task span multiple days or book a specific hour?
No. A task is atomic on one calendar date and consumes total daily hours from all listed resources. It cannot split work across dates or prove that people and equipment are free during the same clock-time interval. Set unavailable dates to 0; holidays and weekends are not inferred.
Does a fixed date guarantee the task will be assigned?
No. Fixed-day tasks are considered before automatic tasks, but two fixed tasks can conflict or a task can request more hours than the resource offers on that date. The conflicting task stays unassigned with an explicit shortage; the planner never overbooks a day.
How do JSON and CSV differ?
Version 1 JSON saves the editable project; a valid import replaces the current in-memory draft and an invalid file leaves it intact. CSV is a rectangular report with task rows and resource-day ledger rows, not an import format. Text that could be read as a spreadsheet formula is escaped.
Is this the Gantt dependency planner or round-robin scheduler?
No. Gantt computes dependency timing and slack assuming unlimited resources; this tool accounts for per-day person and equipment hours. Round-robin arranges team matchups into rounds and courts, not arbitrary resource-hour demands. The project stays in this browser tab with no automatic save or server upload.
Privacy
Names and task demands are processed in browser memory. The project is not submitted to a server API and is not automatically saved. Download JSON before leaving; the file and CSV can contain sensitive staffing and equipment details.
