Quilt Layout Planner
Plan a rectangular quilt top with editable block patterns, rotations and colors. The finished block width is measured between seam lines. Each straight-edged piece receives the chosen seam allowance on every edge, including a geometric offset along the diagonal of half-square triangles. Review the cut sizes and counts by color, then save the layout SVG, real-size piece-outline SVG and CSV cut list. The plan covers the block field only; borders, backing, binding, shrinkage and fabric grain need separate planning.
Key features
- 1–12 rows and columns with independent block patterns and quarter-turn rotations
- Solid, four-patch, half-square-triangle and three-strip rail-fence blocks
- Per-block two-color editing and copy-to-all control
- Per-edge seam allowance, including diagonal triangle cutting outline
- Color-grouped cut counts, actual-size layout/templates SVG and CSV
How to use
- Choose row and column counts, finished block side length and seam allowance in centimetres.
- Select a block from the diagram or cell selector; choose a pattern, rotation and two colors.
- Check the finished quilt field size and the color-grouped cut table.
- Download the layout SVG, cut-outline templates SVG or CSV list.
- Print templates at 100% and trial-sew a block before cutting the full fabric quantity.
Use cases
- Compare rotations of half-square-triangle blocks
- Count colors and dimensions for a four-patch quilt
- Draft a mixed rail-fence and solid-block layout
Frequently asked questions
Are block sizes finished or cut sizes?
The block side is the finished distance between seam lines. The cut table adds seam allowance to every piece edge. For a square or strip, the cut width and height each add twice the allowance.
Why is a half-square triangle cut larger than a simple square plus two allowances?
Its cut outline offsets all three sides, including the diagonal seam, by the selected allowance. The bounding width therefore grows more than a straight square edge. Use the SVG outline rather than treating its bounding box as a square cut.
Does rotation change how many pieces to cut?
No. A quarter-turn rotates the visible block layout, while the corresponding pieces and their cutting dimensions stay the same.
Are the templates ready to use with any fabric?
They are geometric cut outlines at real centimetre dimensions. Print at 100%, check a ruler, trial-sew and adjust for fabric grain, cutting method, pressing and shrinkage.
Does the result include borders, batting or binding?
No. The finished size and cut list cover the rectangular block field only. Add borders, backing, batting and binding separately.
