Photo Mosaic Maker
Split a target image into a grid, then compare each cell's average RGB color and four-region color pattern with your tile photos. Each source photo is center-cropped to a square for both matching and rendering. Adjust columns, output tile size, and the maximum number of times a photo can be reused. Export the PNG and a JSON report with every assignment and score. Selection is greedy in row order; it does not recognize objects or find a globally optimal arrangement.
Key features
- Match target cells to centered photo crops using 70% average RGB and 30% four-quadrant RGB distance
- Choose 2–40 columns, 8–64px output tiles, and a per-photo reuse cap or unlimited reuse
- Detect insufficient reuse capacity before starting the match
- Use local PNG, JPEG, or still WebP files, with a built-in example, progress, and cancellation
- Preview the PNG and export a JSON report of source names, reuse counts, assignments, and scores
How to use
- Choose one target image and 2–24 tile photos, or load the built-in example.
- Set column count, output tile size, and the maximum uses per photo; review the estimated grid.
- Create the mosaic to match a photo to each cell by its color features.
- Review the preview, average score, and usage, then download the PNG and JSON report.
Use cases
- Rebuild a logo or group portrait from event photographs
- Inspect which source photos dominate the result by reading usage counts
- Compare unlimited repetition with a strict cap that spreads use across the collection
- Try different column counts and tile sizes for online publishing
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a photo collage?
A collage places photos in a chosen order. This tool analyzes a separate target image and chooses a photo for each cell by color features.
How is this different from pixel art conversion?
Pixel art turns one image into solid-color blocks. Here each block is filled with a centered crop of one of your uploaded photos.
What does a reuse cap of 0 mean?
Zero means unlimited. A positive number caps uses of each source photo. If photo count times the cap is less than the number of grid cells, generation stops with a capacity error.
Does it match objects or composition?
It compares overall RGB and RGB in four quadrants. It does not recognize people, objects, or scene meaning, and byte RGB distance is not perceptual color difference.
Why might the output aspect ratio shift slightly?
Rows are rounded to a whole number based on the target aspect ratio and output tiles are square. The result can differ slightly in shape, and the outer edges of tile photos are center-cropped.
What limits and cancellation apply?
Use one target plus 2–24 photos, at most 8 MiB and 2 million pixels per file, 12 million decoded pixels and 48 MiB total input, 1,600 cells, and 4 million output pixels. Canceling discards incomplete output.
