Analysis Mesh Generator
Create a small linear-element mesh for an axis-aligned rectangle, right triangle or rectangular solid. Structured subdivisions produce conforming triangles/quadrilaterals in 2D and tetrahedra/hexahedra in 3D. The requested edge size is a strict maximum of the generated element edges, subject to resource limits. Every element is checked for positive signed area or volume; shared facets, the outer boundary and the total measure are checked. A bounded extra axis-refinement search tries to meet the quality threshold for rectangles/cuboids; any remaining misses are reported. No global optimum or certification is claimed. This bounded browser tool does not import CAD/STL, mesh curved or arbitrary boundaries, run a solver or approve a real design.
Key features
- 2D rectangle and right-triangle meshing with conforming triangles, plus rectangle quads
- 3D cuboid tetrahedral six-way cell split and orthogonal hexahedral grid
- Verified maximum element-edge size, positive orientation, domain measure and external boundary
- Per-element 0–1 quality, minimum/mean/10th percentile, histogram and below-threshold count
- Local VTK legacy unstructured grid, editable project JSON, analysis JSON and SVG preview downloads
How to use
- Choose an axis-aligned domain and compatible element type, or load one of four examples.
- Enter width, height and optional depth with a selected coordinate unit, plus a target maximum element-edge length.
- Set a 0–1 shape-quality threshold and generate the mesh. Axis counts may be refined when feasible; any unmet threshold is reported, not hidden.
- Inspect node/element count, boundary and total-measure checks, worst cells and the quality histogram.
- Download the topology as VTK, a report as JSON or an SVG preview; restore only version-1 project JSON.
Use cases
- Teach triangular versus quadrilateral plate subdivisions
- Compare mesh counts after reducing maximum edge length
- Inspect six-tetrahedra-per-cuboid decomposition
- Find poor-quality cells when a cuboid is strongly elongated
Frequently asked questions
Which geometries are supported?
Only an axis-aligned rectangle, a right triangle with legs on the x/y axes, or an axis-aligned cuboid. Arbitrary polygons, curved surfaces, holes, STL/OBJ and imported CAD are outside this version.
Does the edge target guarantee element quality?
No. The generated element edges are checked against the requested maximum length, but geometric shape quality is separate. For rectangles/cuboids, a bounded search may refine axis counts to meet the threshold. Unmet elements are still reported; the search is not a global quality optimizer.
What does a quality score mean?
For triangles it is 4√3 area divided by the sum of squared edge lengths. For tetrahedra it uses 18 volume divided by the square roots of the sums of squared six edges and four face areas. For these axis-aligned quads/hexes, the shortest-to-longest axis edge ratio is used. One is ideal under that particular metric; scores across different element kinds are not directly comparable.
Are inverted elements and boundaries checked?
Yes for the supported linear primitives. Every triangle/tetrahedron has positive signed measure; facets are counted, and outer facets are checked against the chosen primitive boundary. Summed area/volume and perimeter/surface area are compared with analytic values.
Can I run an engineering simulation with the download?
The VTK legacy file contains geometry, connectivity and shape-quality scalars for inspection. Solver-specific materials, boundary conditions, loads, element formulations, convergence studies and safety checks are absent. No physical design is certified.
Does changing mm/m convert my dimensions?
No. The unit choice labels the numeric coordinates and output; it does not rescale the entered numbers. Set or convert dimensions explicitly before generation. Files are produced locally in this browser.
Privacy
All geometry and topology are generated in browser memory. Project restore and VTK/JSON/SVG downloads stay local; no mesh is sent to an application API.
