Bilingual Video Study Player
This player places two read-only subtitle tracks against the same video timeline. It connects original and translated lines by overlapping time, lets you jump between lines and replay the selected segment twice, three times or continuously. Hide the translation while listening, then reveal it and track your replay and reveal counts, review state and word notes. Records stay in tab memory until you download CSV or JSON; matching JSON can be imported later with the same subtitle pair. This tool does not edit subtitle text, re-encode video or translate automatically.
Key features
- Load a local video plus separate source and translation SRT/WebVTT tracks for timed comparison.
- Jump to previous/next lines, play one to three times or loop, and pause at the line end.
- Hide and reveal translations while tracking play and reveal counts per line.
- Mark lines new, review or learned and keep a short vocabulary note for each.
- Download a study table as CSV or matching-session records as importable JSON.
How to use
- Choose a video and original/translation caption files, or load the paired subtitle example.
- Adjust the temporary translation timing offset if the two tracks do not line up.
- Select a line, repeat its video interval, hide the translation and reveal it after listening.
- Set a review state and note, then export CSV or JSON. Reopen the same subtitle pair to import the JSON later.
Use cases
- Explain a foreign-language line before revealing its translation.
- Repeat a short line while shadowing its pronunciation and intonation.
- Mark difficult lines for review and save vocabulary notes for another session.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit or export subtitles here?
No. This player reads two subtitle files for study. Use the separate Subtitle Workbench to change timing/text or convert SRT, WebVTT and basic ASS. The translation offset here changes the comparison temporarily, not either source file.
Does the player know whether two sentences are correct translations?
No. Pairing uses only overlap on the video timeline. One original line may map to several translation cues and the texts may not be semantic equivalents. Unused translation cues are counted separately.
What video and subtitle files work?
Local video must be playable by the current browser, up to 200MB and two hours. Captions must be plain-text SRT or WebVTT without styling or cue-position settings, up to 1MB and 300 cues per file. Advanced VTT and ASS are outside this study player's scope.
Are study records saved automatically?
No. They live in this browser tab until you export CSV or JSON. JSON can be reimported only with the same subtitle pairing. The export can contain personal notes, so choose carefully before sharing it.
Are my video, subtitles or notes uploaded?
No. Playback, caption pairing, records and downloads run in the browser. Selecting a file does not send it to the application server.
Privacy
Video, subtitles and notes are processed only in this tab's memory. An exported CSV/JSON may contain subtitle text and your notes; you decide whether to share that file. Records not exported disappear when the tab closes.
