Music Score Editor
This browser-local editor turns sequences of notes and rests into readable treble-clef staff notation. Each of two voices has its own staff; every voice must fill each measure exactly. Set pitch spelling, a flat or sharp, octave, whole through sixteenth duration, dot and ties. Playback uses simple browser oscillators, while SVG gives a scalable printable image and MusicXML preserves the supported notation for re-editing. This is a deliberately limited notation editor: key signature is C major, both staves use treble clef, and chords, tuplets, dynamics, lyrics, beams, slurs and arbitrary MusicXML are not supported.
Key features
- Validate 2–6 beats per measure with quarter or eighth beat units and two independent voices across up to eight measures.
- Edit notes, rests, accidentals, dotted values and pitch-matched ties across event or measure boundaries.
- Preview a scalable two-staff score and hear synchronized voices with simple sine and triangle tones.
- Save self-contained SVG, native JSON, or a MusicXML 4.0 partwise subset that this editor can import again.
- Reject unsupported MusicXML constructs and invalid beat totals rather than silently changing a score.
How to use
- Load the two-bar example, set the title, meter and tempo, or import a MusicXML file exported by this editor.
- Change each event to a note or rest and set its duration. Add or remove events until both voices exactly fill each measure.
- For notes, choose pitch, accidental and octave. Mark tie start on one note and tie stop on the immediately following note of the same pitch and voice.
- Check the score preview, play it, then save SVG for print or MusicXML and JSON for later editing.
Use cases
- Sketch a two-part melody and check rhythm before sharing it.
- Make a clean, scalable score image for a worksheet or rehearsal sheet.
- Exchange a small notation sketch with software that accepts MusicXML, keeping this editor's supported subset.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the preview disappear after an edit?
The score is shown and exported only when every voice in every measure adds up to the selected meter and all ties connect adjacent notes of identical pitch. The issue list identifies the measure and voice to fix.
Can I re-import the exported MusicXML?
Yes. This editor imports its own MusicXML 4.0 partwise profile with two treble staves, 24 divisions per quarter, notes and rests through sixteenth, dots, accidentals and ties. It rejects unsupported features such as chords, tuplets and transposing parts.
Does playback sound like a piano?
No. It uses simple browser oscillators, one sine and one triangle voice, to check pitches and rhythm. It does not synthesize a realistic instrument or interpret dynamics.
How are ties handled?
A tie start must connect to the very next note in the same voice, including across a barline. That next note must have the same sounding pitch and a tie stop. Playback holds it as one sound.
What notation is outside this editor?
It uses fixed C-major key signatures and treble clefs. Chords, lyrics, tuplets, beams, slurs, articulations, dynamics, repeat marks, complex engraving and arbitrary imported MusicXML are outside this limited profile.
Is my score uploaded?
No. Editing, playback, SVG rendering and MusicXML import/export run in the browser. Your file is read only after you select it.
Privacy
The score and imported file are processed in this browser and are not sent to a server. Save an SVG, MusicXML or JSON file if you want to keep a copy.
