Nonogram Studio
A nonogram hides a binary picture behind ordered runs of filled cells in each row and column. Draw your own picture or enter clues, then test whether the clues have no solution, one solution or several within a bounded search. Solve by marking filled, empty or unknown cells; line deductions and contradictions are explained without turning this into an image filter.
Key features
- Derive ordered row and column run clues from a 5×5–10×10 binary picture, including 0 for an empty line
- Validate user-entered clue lines and count up to two solutions to distinguish none, unique and multiple
- Bounded propagation and search with separate timeout rather than a false uniqueness claim
- Interactive filled, empty and unknown marks with keyboard arrows and direct mark keys
- Sound line-based hints, contradiction checks, completion against all clues and explicit solution reveal
- Puzzle-only versioned JSON session export/import with strict UTF-8, shape and size checks
How to use
- Choose a size-tier preset, or open the creator to draw a binary picture or paste #/. rows.
- Generate ordered row and column clues, or enter one clue line per row and column; inspect the uniqueness result.
- Return to the hidden-source puzzle, mark cells with touch or keyboard, and request a forced line hint if needed.
- Check contradictions or completion, save/load puzzle-only JSON, or explicitly confirm answer reveal.
Use cases
- Create a classroom picture-logic puzzle from a tiny original monochrome drawing
- Check whether handwritten row and column clues really identify one picture
- Practice distinguishing a blank cell from an unresolved cell without guessing
Frequently asked questions
How are clues formed?
For each row and column, consecutive filled cells form ordered run lengths. A fully empty line is written as 0. These are not Sudoku digits or Kakuro sums.
Does a picture always give a unique puzzle?
No. The picture guarantees at least one matching grid, but its row and column clues can admit several. The tool checks up to two solutions and reports multiple when found; a search timeout remains unknown.
What does the size tier mean?
Gentle, standard and challenge select original 5×5, 7×7 and 10×10 fixtures with eight rotations/reflections. They are size-based practice tiers, not a measured human difficulty rating or unlimited random generation.
Are hints guesses?
No. A hint is shown only if every currently compatible pattern for one row or column forces the same value in an unmarked cell. If this bounded deduction finds none, it says so.
Does saving reveal the answer?
No. The versioned JSON contains dimensions, row/column clues and your marks, not the source picture or computed solution. Revealing the answer requires a separate confirmation and a uniquely solvable clue set.
