Knitting Chart Editor
Build a knitting chart with original text tokens. Flat charts show odd right-side rows from right to left and even wrong-side rows from left to right; rounds read right to left. Place a physical-column repeat, inspect stitch counts and written instructions, then save an editable JSON project or a PDF chart.
Key features
- Flat and round charts with explicit row reading direction
- Original text-token legend for knit, purl, yarn over, two decreases, front/back increase, make-one and no stitch
- Physical-column repeat bracket expanded in work order
- Consumed and produced stitch counts with row-to-row continuity warnings
- Editable JSON roundtrip and two-page-or-longer PDF with chart and row instructions
How to use

- Select a text stitch token and tap chart cells; the bottom line is row one.
- Optionally set the inclusive physical-column repeat start/end and repeat count.
- Review every row's reading direction, written instructions and stitch balance.
- Save editable JSON at any time; when counts are consistent, download the PDF.
Use cases
- Draft a small lace swatch with yarn overs balanced by decreases
- Describe an in-the-round motif to a knitting group
- Keep an editable chart with a printable row-by-row handout
Frequently asked questions
Do the symbols copy Craft Yarn Council artwork?
No. This tool draws its own plain text tokens and explains each token in a chart key. The reading conventions and abbreviation mapping are informed by Craft Yarn Council references.
Why does a right-side K become purl on a wrong-side row?
The chart symbols describe the fabric appearance from the right side. On a wrong-side row, the physical action is reversed for K/P; supported decreases and increases also have explicit wrong-side action names.
What does the repeat bracket mean?
Start and end are inclusive physical chart columns counted from the left. The bracket is repeated two to eight times in each row in that row's actual reading order. All rows use the same bracket.
Why is PDF disabled?
The tool counts stitches each token consumes and produces. If a row consumes a different number from the previous row's output, or if the derived cast-on is zero, PDF is disabled until you edit the chart. This is a mechanical count check, not a guarantee the pattern is knittable.
Can I import a knitting chart image or stitch pattern?
No. Import accepts only this tool's version-one editable JSON format. PDF is a printable output and does not import back into the editor.
Privacy
The chart and PDF are prepared locally in your browser. The Korean-capable font is loaded from this site's own assets; the project is not uploaded.
