Reading Pacer
Practice a passage as small word groups at a chosen pace. Pause, move back or advance manually, then write your own answers to recall prompts after the final group. The active-time progression rate and the answers are recorded separately; the tool never grades understanding automatically.
Key features
- One to six space-delimited tokens per displayed group with a 60–600 token-per-minute target
- Pause, resume, previous and next controls with active time that excludes pauses
- Adjustable 22–48 px reading text for small screens and dark mode
- Target pace and observed progression rate shown apart from post-reading answers
- Up to five author-written recall prompts and local history of twenty completed runs
- Explicit JSON history download with no account, upload or automatic save
How to use
- Paste a passage of at least twenty space-delimited tokens and add one or more recall questions, one per line.
- Choose a target pace, words per group and a comfortable text size, then start.
- Read each group as it advances; pause or step backward whenever needed.
- After the last group, compare the active-time progression rate to the target and answer your recall questions separately.
- Download the history JSON before leaving if you want to keep the run.
Use cases
- Practice reading a short article in manageable groups
- Repeat the same passage at different target paces without treating speed as comprehension
- Keep your own written recollection alongside an active-time reading record
Frequently asked questions
What does the speed number measure?
The target is the configured number of space-delimited tokens per minute. The observed progression rate divides the whole passage token count by active time from start to last group, excluding pauses. It reflects this viewer's progression and manual skips, not verified eye movements or reading ability. Runs under one second show no observed rate.
Does a Korean token mean a linguistic word?
No. The same whitespace token rule is used in both languages. A Korean spacing unit is not necessarily a morpheme or a comparable English word, so compare paces only for similar texts and tokenization.
Are the answers graded or included in the speed score?
No. You write answers only after finishing. They are stored next to the run but never change target pace, active time or observed progression rate. The tool has no answer key or automatic comprehension score.
What happens when I pause, go back or leave the tab?
Paused time is excluded and remaining time on the current group is preserved. Back starts that group over while active time continues if running. Hiding the tab pauses the run. You may edit or restart; a partial run is not added to completed history.
Is the passage stored online?
No. Passage, questions, answers and at most twenty completed runs remain in this browser tab. They are lost when it closes unless you explicitly download the JSON history. The tool does not upload them.
Privacy
Your passage and recall answers stay in this browser tab. No account, upload or automatic storage is used. A downloaded history JSON contains the full passage and answers, so review it before sharing.
