Audio ABX Blind Test
An ABX experiment lets you hear A and B, then decide which one an unidentified X matches. This page assigns X anew for each trial and withholds the answer until the run ends. It helps explore differences between clips; it does not assess hearing or any medical condition.
Key features
- Decode two local files in your browser and use matching playback controls for A, B and X
- Randomize X on each trial without exposing answers mid-run
- Choose 4, 8 or 12 trials and see the exact binomial chance tail
- Download JSON or CSV without audio or original filenames, with a reproducible seed
How to use
- Select separate audio files for A and B, or load the generated example.
- Choose a trial count and start the experiment.
- On each trial, play A, B and X at least once, then choose whether X matches A or B.
- At the end, review the answers and chance calculation and save JSON or CSV.
Use cases
- Explore whether two encoding settings sound different
- Blind compare audio before and after EQ changes
- Practice a repeatable comparison of two recordings
Frequently asked questions
Is an ABX result a hearing test?
No. It reports answers under your audio setup and cannot evaluate hearing, disease or a medical condition.
How is X chosen?
The browser generates a random seed at the start and assigns X to A or B on every trial. It hides assignments until the final report, which includes the seed and answer list.
What does the chance percentage mean?
It is the chance of this score or better if every A/B answer were an independent 50/50 guess. Small samples and uncontrolled listening conditions limit what a result can show.
Are my audio files uploaded?
The tool decodes and plays them in browser memory. It does not upload or automatically save audio or answers. Downloads exclude source audio and original filenames.
Which audio formats work?
The tool checks WAV, MP3, Ogg, WebM and M4A signatures, then relies on browser decoding. Each file is limited to 5 MB and 0.2–15 seconds; codec support varies.
Privacy
